Art has long been revered because it does not only act as a source of entertainment and aesthetic value. Above anything else, art, regardless of its form and medium, serves to inform, inspire, and influence. In the case of barry johnson, an interdisciplinary creative, the craft is his way to build a community of like-minded individuals and highlight stories of the Black community as well as the truth about today’s realities.
This Black self-taught artist is making waves in multiple industries. On top of being an author, podcaster, and TEDx speaker, he also serves as a passion-driven artist whose dedication toward exploring race, community, and culture through his work is gaining recognition.
barry johnson is a man of the world. He has held residencies throughout the Puget Sound region, Hawaii, Tulum, and Argentina, and his experience with immersing in these different places and cultures provides fuel to his pieces.
Recently, this immensely talented personality authored and illustrated a children’s book titled “Oh What Wonderful Hair.” Boasting an inventory of works that have been shown and collected around the world, barry johnson is an expert in different mediums and sizes and has left a mark through multiple permanent outputs across King and Pierce County.
Included in his portfolio of accomplishments and career milestones are his multiple grants and awards. This multifaceted artist, who has also spoken at a TEDx event in Seattle about the power of creating various personas to boost one’s career, has been honored with the Edwin T. Pratt award, smART Ventures award, and the 2018 GAP award. Additionally, barry johnson became a finalist for the Conductive Garboil Grant in 2018.
Currently based in Federal Way, barry johnson plans to take up architecture while remaining as a standout in the art scene. With his phenomenal sculptures, installations, portraits, abstracts, and more, it will be no surprise if he manages to take center stage in the coming years.
Furthermore, as one of the creative minds behind the permanent Black Lives Matter mural in Seattle, barry johnson is committed to being a face of social justice. Recognizing that art is a way to document what is happening in the world and sending across powerful messages, he intends to celebrate the Black culture through his art practice and shed light on both historical and current issues affecting the community.
In the coming years, this American artist is expected to emerge as a powerhouse in the scene. Driven by his vision of wielding the power of art as a form of information, resistance, and collaboration, barry johnson hopes to establish a more solid platform and a more visible brand where he could share the products of his imagination and passion.
Also aiming to create much larger art pieces and activations across the world, barry johnson sees himself dabbling in several other mediums and sizes. He can assure that excellence and purpose will consistently stand at the center of all of his future creative efforts.
