James Charles, one of the world’s most prominent social media influencers, has faced many backlashes in his career due to various reasons. It started back in 2017 when he joked about contracting the Ebola virus while on his trip to Africa. He had feuds in the same year with several celebrities such as Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. In 2018, he dealt with major backlash from global fans after calling pop sensation Ariana Grande the rudest celebrity he’s ever met. The list goes on. Today, his career is barred by YouTube’s creator responsibility policy for supposedly sending sexually explicit messages to minors.

James Charles is an international internet personality. He has over 25 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, 27.2 million followers on Instagram, and 7.8 million followers on Twitter. His content focuses on makeup tutorials and lifestyle. James has also landed various collaborations and partnerships with prominent beauty and lifestyle brands. The influencer, together with Morphe, has created his own eye palette, which caused a stir among fans across the globe.

But with the current situations, he is facing after involving himself with two underaged boys, James Charles has put a dent in his career, and partners are quickly responding to the wildfire. Morphe posted on its Twitter page last week that the cosmetics company will officially sever ties with the beauty influencer.

As Morphe’s tweet reads, “In light of the recent allegations against James Charles, Morphe and James have agreed to end our business relationship and wind down sales of the Morphe x Jame Charles product offering. It is and has always been Morphe’s goal to create a positive, safe, and empowering space where all beauty lovers can freely share their artistry and passion for cosmetics, and Morphe is committed to furthering that goal.”

In a video posted on April 2, 2021, entitled “holding myself accountable,” James Charles apologized to his global fans and people who have been affected by the issue. He explained that he merely trusted the information given by the two minors on Snapchat rather than verifying if the information he was given were accurate. “In both of these situations, doing research into these people’s public social media profiles would’ve revealed their true ages, and therefore these conversations would have never happened in the first place. But I didn’t do the research, and that is what is so embarrassing,” said the beauty guru.

YouTube also told BBC that James Charles’ channel would temporarily be demonetized due to the recent accusations. “If we see that a creator’s on- and/or off-platform behavior harms our users, community, employees, or ecosystem, we may take action to protect the community,” explained a YouTube spokesperson.

James Charles also apologized to the two minors involved in the controversy. “To the guys involved in the situation, I want to say I’m sorry,” he said on his video. “I’m sorry that I added you, I’m sorry that I flirted with you, and I’m really sorry that I made you uncomfortable. I didn’t understand how a situation like this could affect the people involved, but now I do, and for that, to the victims, I am so, so sorry. And I promise that something like this will never ever happen again.”

James Charles is one of YouTube’s top earners. He was born on May 23, 1999, and is currently residing in his hometown of Bethlehem, New York.
