There is no denying music’s power to circumpass cultural, economic, and political differences and bring people from all backgrounds together. Yet in this day and age of ever-growing divide, even music is starting to become more segregated as people flock to genres they know. Musician and songwriter KJ hopes to break that dividing line and draw people together through music.
Up-and-coming music sensation Kevin Flahive, aka KJ, is on a mission to bring people together through the power of music. The musician, singer, and songwriter from Los Angeles, California, looks to get a new music flavor that bridges genres and music lovers everywhere.
Originally from upstate New York, KJ moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. His work moves across various boundaries and brings together a blend of the 50’s Doo Wop and 70’s Soul music. The musician grew up listening to influences like Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Elvis, Bob Marley, James Brown, and many others. KJ considers himself a true lover of music and has an undying passion for his craft.
And yet, equally as powerful as his love for music is the musician’s desire to bring people together. His goal is to use his art to “spread the message of love and positivity,” breaking down boundaries and unifying people from various backgrounds and with multiple interests. His genre is a great testament to this- a mash-up of numerous music categories with blurred demarcation lines. Because his music is so homogenous, his following often crosses generations and music circles.
KJ’s down to earth vibe gives him a signature personality that makes him stand out as an artist. He lives in Venice Beach and carries the laid back and borderline Bohemian feel into his music. Armed with his trusty acoustic guitar, he frequently creates covers of hits by artists across eras, from retro tracks like songs by Hall and Oates to the modern feel-good songs of John Legend and Justin Bieber.
Very soon, KJ will be wandering away from the cover movement as he seeks to launch his first-ever EP album entitled “Best Day of My Life.” He hopes that this record would become the start of a string of albums that will hit digital and radio airwaves. KJ looks to the future with much optimism, knowing that there are people out there who can connect with his sound, music, and message. As he cries out in the wilderness with the launch of “Best Day of My Life,” he’s optimistic that his music will create a strong community of people who love life and live to enjoy every moment.
When KJ isn’t creating music, he dedicates his time tutoring for Reading Partners LA. This non-profit organization works to help elementary students who are in danger of falling behind because of reading comprehension limits. The musician is also an affiliate of the charity Mutual Aid LA and dedicates a tenth of his online shop’s proceeds to providing food, clothing, and assistance to those in need all across the Los Angeles area.
