In the follow-up to the multiple-award-winning Joker, Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, and Joaquin Phoenix will reprise the title character.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Lady Gaga is in line to play Quinn, the former Arkham Asylum doctor who frequently made appearances in Batman-related stories as the Joker’s love interest and sidekick. The role was played by Margot Robbie in the high-profile movies Suicide Squad in 2016 and The Suicide Squad in 2021. In addition, the protagonist of the superhero movie Birds of Prey from 2020 featured Robbie’s take on the role.
The report claims that Quinn from Joker 2 will “live in a different DC reality than… Robbie’s Harley Quinn” despite the fact that the plot of the movie has not been made public. This statement likely reflects the original Joker’s distance from earlier iterations of the character. In addition, the movie’s subtitle, “Folie à Deux,” refers to a psychiatric illness in which two people share a delusion. This could apply to Quinn’s role in the movie’s plot, according to a script cover page that director and co-writer Todd Phillips released on social media on Wednesday.
The Reporter also claims that Joker 2 will be “a musical,” but he doesn’t provide any other information.
Although rumors claim that Phoenix has not yet committed to the film, Phillips also shared a photo of Phoenix reading the screenplay in the same social media post. It is improbable that the film will proceed without his involvement, despite The Reporter’s insiders’ claims that “Warners has yet to complete a contract with the actor, with the two sides deep into it.”
A Star Is Born garnered an Oscar nomination for best actress, and House of Gucci received nods for best actress at the Baftas and the Golden Globes. Lady Gaga’s foray into cinema acting has proven to be incredibly successful thus far.
