The beauty industry is continually changing. New makeup trends, products, and techniques are emerging at a rapid pace. It takes a flexible and open mind to survive in such a volatile industry. Star Bahati is one such person. She is a professional makeup artist with over 23 years of experience under her belt. She is committed to continually improving her craft while helping others get started in their careers as makeup artists.
Star Bahati trained at the Los Angeles Trade Technical College of Cosmetology and attended several training programs and workshops for major cosmetic brands. She has worked with major cosmetic companies such as MAC Cosmetics, Estée Lauder, Prescriptive, Smashbox Cosmetics, and Sephora. Star Bahati is also a part of the local 706 Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Guild, which currently has very few African Americans.
This highly skilled makeup artist has worked on several commercial shoots and on various editorial shoots. She has experience working as a makeup artist for theater, creating dramatic theatrical looks. Star moved to Germany for a time, and while there, she was a makeup artist to several international acts. She enjoys working with bridal parties as well, creating looks for brides and their entourage year-round in the greater Los Angeles area.
Her skills and expertise were noticed in the industry, and she has subsequently had the responsibility to lead teams of makeup artists for various high fashion runway shows. Star Bahati is also an accomplished makeup artist for televisions and film. The television shows she worked on includes MTV’s Ridiculousness, VH1’s Basketball Wives, TV One’s R&B Divas, VH1’s Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood, and Global Cinema TV. Star was the makeup artist for notable celebrities Nichelle Nichols and Tami Roman.
She started her company Star 4 Makeup Inc. in 2001. “My family inspires me,” she says, “I come from a family full of self-made successful entrepreneurs, and they were supportive of my business venture.” Besides her work as a makeup artist on set, she also trains aspiring makeup artists and even regular people. She trains them in makeup techniques, from makeup fundamentals to more advanced levels, and the latest makeup trends. Continuing with the thread of training, Star Bahati is currently planning to open a trade school for at-risk girls. At this school, she will provide courses for them to learn the skills they need to make a living as a makeup artist. Star Bahati is also currently developing a cosmetic line.
Over 23 years of experience as a professional makeup artist translates to a fountain of knowledge about her craft. But as makeup and beauty trends change, Star Bahati knows the value of continually learning and improving to keep pace with an evolving industry. “I love working on new projects. I see it as a way to increase my knowledge. Exposing myself to new things means I can continuously perfect my craft and provide up-to-date training for my clients,” she says. Eventually, she wants to create a mentoring program. “I think it’s important that emerging makeup artists have someone they can talk to, someone more experienced who can help them navigate the beauty industry. I can mentor them myself, or maybe I can create a system where they can learn from many other makeup artists in the field,” says this successful entrepreneur and makeup artist. Star Bahati is dedicated and passionate about her craft and openly shares her passion and expertise with anyone willing to learn.
