Initiatives that have been established to empower women are not only aimed to give what constitutes half of the global population the opportunity to build a sense of self-worth and make decisions on their own. These efforts in fostering the well-being of women are also geared toward enabling them to contribute to the overall health and social development of their families, communities, and countries, as well. More than anything else, it seeks to address the damage that harmful gender norms have caused since time immemorial. The Burning Bra, a highly respected nonprofit organization, has made it its mission to provide services that empower females from all walks of life. Today, it remains at the forefront of the movement to build women up, allowing them to maximize their potential.
“Women helping women.” This line is at the heart of The Burning Bra, a purpose-driven passion project founded by Monica Morgan and her daughters, Britt Taylor and Ashley Meador. Since its establishment, it has gone all-out in delivering services that empower women in the home, workplace, and community. Driven by the vision of a future where women get to experience a quality life, one that is abuse-free and gender-equal, this non-government organization runs on donations and the support of advocates who believe in the same mission.
The launch of The Burning Bra is immensely symbolic. “Contrary to popular folklore, there were very few bras burned in the protests during the 1960s,” shares Monica Morgan. “However, there was a historic freedom trash can where women burned items, and those who did not burn their bra walked around without wearing one at all.” Both — the burning bra and the lack of a bra — served as a nod to and a clamor for freedom from men.
Through its endeavors, The Burning Bra hopes to make a difference in the lives of countless women by raising their awareness about their rights and providing them with numerous avenues to grow as individuals. Apart from hosting conferences, organizing a networking platform, and amplifying the voices of the less privileged, this widely acclaimed initiative also supports foster and adoptive parents through home programs, clothing donations, and emotional support. Additionally, it gives an emphasis, as well, on offering assistance to mothers on their journey of motherhood and those who are treading the infertility waters. Notably, this brainchild of Monica Morgan and her daughters goes the extra mile in connecting domestic violence survivors to much-needed resources.
In the years since it started, The Burning Bra has managed to build a community of like-minded individuals whose passion for the upliftment of women burns bright. Under the guidance of a team of female power players who are committed to lifting one another and dedicated to the goal of propelling women toward the future that they have always wanted for themselves, it wishes to expand its reach and serve more people in the future.
