Recently, we had a conversation with J. Denison Reed, the talented author of “Clifford’s War: Without End” and “Clifford’s War: The Bluegrass Battleground”. In this exclusive interview, Reed gives us an insider’s view into his writing process behind the development of Clifford Dee’s gripping tale, which offers readers all the must-haves in a thriller series, including the intricacies of character growth, surprising narrative twists, and the nail-biting suspense that keeps readers enthralled throughout. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into the creative process behind this brilliant series.
Can you discuss the importance of setting in your books and how you bring locations to life for readers?
Scene building is pretty important to give the reader the ability to immerse themselves in the story. If you set the scene in a warm climate, there may not be a need for certain attire. It may also change behavior, like a chase scene, for instance. If someone is running in hot weather, they may tend to decide to hide or run out of energy quicker than if they were in a temperate climate.
Do you have a favorite character or scene from your novels? If so, what makes them stand out to you?
I love all my characters. I like to believe they are all part of me, even those that are based on real people, but my low-key favorite is Sara.
How do you stay motivated and inspired throughout the writing process?
Motivation doesn’t come easy at times. When I feel down or go into an episode of self-doubt, I like to look back at my first chapter. I start to storyboard ideas and look at the journey my characters have embarked on. The more you write, the better it comes along. You might even find a little thread you can pull on for a new arc or side plot.
What do you enjoy most about being a writer?
Creating the story. I love story-telling and developing new entertaining ideas.
Are there any authors or books that have particularly influenced your writing style or storytelling?
I find inspiration and influence everywhere. I’ve had ideas from watching videos on the internet, TV Shows, movies, music, and other writers and stories. Recently I have been reading more independently published writers, but in the past, I have read and got ideas from more well-known writers.
What do you hope your legacy as an author will be?
I hope one day, someone will read some of my works and become inspired to create something wonderful. It could be a song, a new story, a movie, a book, a show, art, or a product. But knowing that they were inspired by my creativity will make my writing completely worth it.
How has your perspective on writing evolved since you first started out?
I learned that writing is difficult and takes an immense amount of patience and dedication.
