In a recent Instagram reel, Dr. Daniel Pompa shared a stark warning about the potential health risks associated with artificial Christmas trees. He highlighted the increasing use of flame retardants in these trees, many of which contain high levels of bromine.

“New Christmas trees are coming in with tons of flame retardant,” Dr. Pompa stated. “And if you remember, bromine is a chemical that disrupts your thyroid.”

Bromine, a halogen element, can interfere with the thyroid gland’s ability to produce hormones, potentially leading to hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by an underactive thyroid. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and cognitive difficulties.

Dr. Pompa advises that if you choose to use an artificial Christmas tree, take proactive steps to minimize potential exposure to these chemicals such as thorough cleaning. “If you get one, make sure to wipe down every limb with vinegar,” Dr. Pompa emphasized. “Do it even before you bring it home.”

Dr. Pompa encourages exploring alternative options, such as opting for a live Christmas tree or creating festive decorations using natural materials.

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Disruptions to thyroid function can have significant impacts on overall health and well-being.

Dr. Pompa’s warning serves as a timely reminder to prioritize health and safety during the holiday season. By taking simple precautions, such as thorough cleaning and considering alternative options, individuals can minimize potential exposure to harmful chemicals and enjoy a healthier and happier holiday season.
