Volkswagen’s Current Crisis

Volkswagen is grappling with a confluence of crises. In 2023, VW reported a revenue of €315.2 billion; however, its net profits dropped to €15.8 billion, reflecting a 14.7% decline compared to the previous year. In a situation of declining profitability, the company is forced nevertheless to heavily invest in electrification, software development, and autonomous driving technologies to remain competitive. Yet, despite these efforts, the company is struggling to keep pace with current market leaders.

Even the future perspective doesn’t look bright, if the company does not take immediate action. Due to shrinking profits and high operating costs, VW has introduced a hiring freeze of new employees and even the closure of plants combined with layoffs are in discussions.

Because of high operational costs the company is unlikely to be able to offer electric vehicles at the same attractive conditions to consumers as competitors do. The current market price for a VW ID.3 starts at €34,000, whereas a comparable BYD DOLPHIN costs €28,000, a price difference of more than 20%.

Option 1: Attracting New Cashflow Through the Split into Separate Entities

One strategy that could help Volkswagen navigate its crisis would be to break up the corporation into smaller, more agile companies, much like Siemens with its Healthcare and Energy Divisions. In 2017 the market cap of Siemens AG was around €95 billion. Right after Siemens spun off its healthcare and energy divisions, the sum of the market cap of all three independently operating companies increased to €215 billion in 2021, which is a growth of 126%. General Electric (GE) also split its industrial, healthcare, and energy businesses into separate entities in recent years, boosting the individual companies’ valuation potential.

By splitting Volkswagen’s numerous brands into independent publicly traded companies (AGs), each could focus on its core competencies and growth strategies and thereby individually attract shareholders without being affected by VW’s crisis.

Option 2: Acquisition by a Chinese Company

Another option is an acquisition by a Chinese automaker. The Chinese automotive industry has rapidly evolved, with companies like Geely and BYD becoming global players. Geely’s acquisition of Volvo in 2010 marked a significant shift, allowing Volvo to benefit from substantial financial support and access to the booming Chinese market. Since the acquisition, Volvo’s revenues have nearly tripled, reaching $29 billion in 2022, with profit margins increasing from 4.3% to 6.9%. Volvo has returned as an attractive car choice on the European streets, without losing in brand reputation.

Option 3: Moving to Cheaper Locations

Another possibility is shifting more of Volkswagen’s production capacity outside of Germany to cheaper markets. Currently, Volkswagen has substantial production in countries like Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary, where labor costs are significantly lower than in Germany. According to Eurostat, the average hourly labor cost in Germany’s manufacturing sector was €41.60 in 2022, compared to €13.60 in Poland and €10.40 in Slovakia.

Relocating more production facilities to Eastern Europe or even Asia could help Volkswagen reduce costs, particularly as it shifts towards EVs, which require a fundamentally different production setup than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Option 4: Introduction of New Working Models
