An innumerable combination of factors can serve as the fuel behind a person’s all-out efforts toward making a name for themselves. Some are motivated by the vision of securing a financially stable future, while others barrel through the barriers inherent in any industry to create a legacy for future generations to remember. In the case of Gustavo Rojo, a Spanish film, theater, and television actor, acquiring new experiences, growing as a human being and then translating that into art has always been a passion of his. With nothing on his back but a long-held dream, he left Spain to embark on an adventure in New York in the hopes of enjoying a position in the limelight one day.
From a young age, Gustavo Rojo has known what path he would like to follow and the dream he would like to translate into reality. To make some headway, he began his acting studies at fifteen, which he would later complement with a double degree in journalism and audiovisual communication.
Soon enough, he would be gracing shows and stages, demonstrating his multifacetedness all throughout. He has participated in several series, including Apaches, a show whose world premiere took place on Netflix, where he played the role of a young delinquent who is constantly immersed in fights.
Additionally, the highly dedicated figure has appeared on the big screen. In Sonja: The White Swan, a Norwegian-Irish production directed by the renowned filmmaker Anne Sewitsky, he showcased his acting chops through his role as Tyron Power. He impressed peers and viewers alike, as well, in I’m Not Human at All, where he embodied a tattoo artist who was in a toxic relationship with his girlfriend.
On top of cementing a name in the film and television scene in Spain’s leading private and public networks (TVE and Antena 3), Gustavo Rojo also solidified his portfolio even further by starring in seven plays between 2018 and 2021. He appeared in Tabu, Barcelona 92, El viaje de Sofía, La alegría de vivir, Tres en conserva, Los años elasticos, and Veneno Azul Espera.
Over time, Gustavo Rojo showed promise in not just one area. This go-getter, who has worn several hats, spearheaded and monitored a social project involving children at risk of exclusion and worked in camps with seniors with disabilities. Additionally, his interest in people, nature, and life motivated him to work as a journalist in Nicaragua prior to the 2018 revolution, create his own performance methodology called “Theatre Playing” teaching it across the world and hike more than 2,000 kilometers in Europe armed only with a backpack, a tent, and a portable kitchen.
Gustavo Rojo made another bold decision nine months ago in line with his deep-seated passion for experiencing what the world has to offer. “I left Spain and moved to New York, where I currently reside,” he shared. “No job offers, no acquaintances in the audiovisual industry, no friends or family – just two suitcases and a heart for adventure.”
Through sheer determination and ambition, Gustavo Rojo managed to inch his way toward the spotlight in the competitive New York scene. In July, he made his debut in the off-Broadway play Nylon with Repertorio Español, the most reputable Spanish theater in New York City, receiving great reviews. “The adventure has just started”, he concluded smilingly.
