Top Gun: Maverick maintains impressive box office record in its second weekend

A week after its launch in the United States, “Top Gun: Maverick” is still soaring high.

Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 classic about Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell teaching a new batch of recruits about the value of speed, grossed an estimated $86 million in its second weekend domestically, according to Paramount (PGRE).

Only 32% less than the film’s record-breaking first weekend. Given that most blockbusters are front-loaded, making the majority of their money on opening weekend, such a drop for a blockbuster is exceptional.

“Maverick” had the lowest percent change of any film that has made $100 million in its first weekend, according to Paramount. According to Comscore (SCOR), other major films such as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” from May and “The Batman” from March both dropped 50% in their second weekends.

The film has made $548.6 million globally, according to Paramount.

Given its critical and popular praise, it’s unsurprising that the picture — which also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm — has kept a lot of its charm up to this point.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie received a 97 percent approval rating from critics, and a “A+” CinemaScore from viewers.

At the box office this weekend, it was also up against scant opposition. However, that is anticipated to change when Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” opens next week. Nonetheless, the success of “Maverick” so far cannot be overstated.

The picture took in $160.5 million in the United States during its four-day release during Memorial Day weekend last weekend, breaking the previous record for the richest opening weekend.

In his 40-year career as a box office star, Cruise’s first $100 million opening was undoubtedly his most successful.

Due to the epidemic, the film “Maverick” was constantly postponed. While many theatrical films have made the switch to streaming, Cruise insisted on seeing “Maverick” on the big screen.

So far, this approach has helped “Maverick” hit heights that few other films have.
