After multiple festival circuit screenings in Cannes, Los Angeles, Montreal, Dubai, and Mexico Breed of Greed came back to New York for the 2024 Big Apple Film Festival (BAFF). An atmospheric thriller exploring themes of ambition, betrayal, and the devastating costs of unbridled greed, the film is the latest production by a powerhouse team including Andrew Boszhardt, Ralph Hemecker, and Otto Eckstein. Boasting a stellar cast led by Gina Gershon, Adrian Enscoe, Chelsea Gilligan, Madison Lewis, and Boszhardt himself, Breed of Greed captivated audiences and left them pondering the sinister undercurrents of unchecked wealth.

The story centers on the Wendolyn family, a pharmaceutical dynasty torn apart by the unexpected death of their patriarch. After they all return home to settle the family’s remaining (and dwindling) estate, the family finds themselves beset by the malicious forces of an ancient, karmic curse. The family, whose fortune is built on painkillers, soon discovers that no drug can numb the pain of their own unraveling.

A High-Concept Thriller with Depth

For Andrew Boszhardt, the film was more than just a narrative of greed—it was an opportunity to weave together entertainment and introspection. “Otto, Ralph, and I set out to make a fun, high-concept thriller that would equally entertain and provoke,” said Boszhardt. This dual mission is evident in Breed of Greed, which balances gripping suspense with deeper commentary on corporate ethics, family dynamics, and the relentless hunger for power.

The film’s themes resonate profoundly in today’s socio-political landscape. The Wendolyns’ empire, built on the production and sale of painkillers, mirrors real-world controversies surrounding Big Pharma and its role in public health crises. And how about the recent (and tragic) killing of United Healthcare’s CEO? Clearly, the film is tapping into something that is very much in the zeitgeist. By adding a supernatural twist through the family curse, the film transforms its commentary into an engaging cinematic experience, leaving audiences both entertained and reflective.
