How Chris Caulfield Rebuilt His Music Career After a Decade Away From the Mic

There was a time when the only way musicians could get their names out there was through major labels, but the world has moved on to a digital era where dozens of music streaming platforms have allowed people to make a name for themselves. Thanks to platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube, anyone with the talent and determination can conjure up a song with potential that eventually gets picked up for a movie or a series, giving them more exposure. Through these kinds of platforms, Chris Caulfield was able to realize a lifelong dream.

Chris Caulfield is an emerging artist from outside Toronto, Canada. He has built a strong following of listeners who have fallen in love with his highly introspective lyrics and haunting melodies. In addition, the musician has been known for delivering engaging compositions that transcend a single genre and instead sew elements of alternative and emo-era rock and hip-hop, among other genres. Even before his steady rise, Chris had already stepped on stage to play with bands around the Toronto area in his teens and early twenties.

Although the stars aligned for a more prominent career, Chris decided to spend his time in other endeavors, managing his own business and starting a family. Through the years, the musician endured a string of challenges and experiences. He dealt with chronic pain, depression, and anxiety disorders, which listeners can find prevalent in his music.

By 2020, the world was shaken by a series of significant events, with the COVID-19 pandemic presenting many people, including Chris Caulfield, with a mountain to climb. He was navigating one of the most challenging periods in his life and found himself diving head-first into his great love, music.

Remembering how much he loved performing, Chris quickly set up a home studio and delved deep into his craft, working on a project in late 2020. He wanted to create something different from his early works, creating something personal. Without realizing it, Chris found himself working further than he had initially planned.

In late March 2021, the musician launched his first works in over a decade, introducing listeners to tracks like “The Other Way,” “Gripped,” “Wolves,” and “Letdown,” generating 10,000 streams in the first 30 days on Spotify. By spring that year, Chris was releasing new singles, which encouraged him to push forward.

Playlist editors on the music streaming platform accepted several singles, providing him positive feedback; influencers with millions of followers started to share Chris’s works in posts; and he would meet with several independent labels in North America and Europe, connecting with other artists at various stages for advice, collaborations, and more.

As a musician, Chris is known for blending genres to produce unique and compelling music, making it difficult for listeners sharing his works with friends to pin his style down. His diversity can be attributed to several influences, including rock icons like Radiohead, the Goo Goo Dolls, Breaking Benjamin, and Damien Rice. He also cites modern artists like Post Malone, Juice WRLD, Drake, Khalid, and Halsey, among many others, as playing a significant role in his diverse sound.

Recently, Chris Caulfield released the track “Stockholm Syndrome,” a song that plays off its title on how drugs or medication can help and hurt the user, inducing euphoria and altering the body’s chemical agitation and leaving the user confused about their feelings.

“It’s the first of a number of new singles in a project I am working on with the overall theme being catharsis (naturally, the current working title) and leaning into a darker sound, darker themes, as a way of coping, improving, connecting, as an outlet,” shared Chris.
