Four founders working in fields where the demand showed up years ahead of anyone’s willingness to name it

Hyrox held its first event in Hamburg in 2017. Since then, it has expanded into an international fitness competition with events held across numerous countries and a rapidly growing participant base, according to comments its co-founder gave CNBC in June.

The people who train that way did not appear in 2017. They were already in gyms, running in the morning and lifting at night, following two programs that each assumed the other didn’t exist. What arrived in 2017 was a name for them, and a standard that made what they were doing countable.

Selling to a group of people gets much easier once somebody has named them. The naming is the slow part, and it usually gets done by whoever is willing to spend years being told the idea is a stretch.

Getting A Subject Taken Seriously

For most of the twenty years Edward Garcia has worked on social disconnection, the obstacle was not disagreement. It was the word soft.

Loneliness reads as an emotional matter, something for the self-help shelves. It did not read as a health risk or an economic burden, which meant it never appeared in budgets or reimbursement codes or any of the categories that decide what a health system pays for. Garcia spent years building the evidence base and carrying it into rooms where it could be acted on, working alongside researchers including Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, whose studies established much of the epidemiology the field now runs on.

He came at it from a particular kind of training. Political science and comparative health politics at Boston University, then a master’s at Johns Hopkins focused on poverty and upward mobility, with a semester in Spain studying health equity under Vicente Navarro. Ten years in federal government followed: the Census Bureau, CMS under two administrations, the House Energy and Commerce health subcommittee. Through GILC and his health policy firm fwd Health Partners, Garcia has spent years carrying that evidence into the rooms where policy gets written: reimbursement codes, zoning decisions, transit planning, the categories that decide what a health system actually funds.

His argument through GILC is that disconnection is a design failure rather than a personal one, and the distinction decides who ends up paying for it. A private difficulty gets a consumer market. A structural condition gets argued over in the places where zoning, transit, and reimbursement rules are written, which is slower and worth considerably more.

The Sport That Had No Training Plan

Samuel Owers builds for the athletes Hyrox made visible. RYVOLVE, his app, runs strength, running, and conditioning through a single periodized plan with HYROX preparation built in.

A decade ago, there was nothing to sell that person. Someone who both ran and lifted was a person with two hobbies that got in each other’s way, with no way of knowing whether they were any good at the combination, because nothing measured it. The standard arrived from outside, and only once it existed did a training product have anything to attach itself to.

Owers has built outward from the app since. FindRox handles race discovery and hybrid. Club handles the social side, which is the sort of scaffolding marathon running spent fifty years accumulating. Hybrid racing is nine years old and has been assembling it in public.

Research Aimed At An Afterthought

Most of what is known about hair loss was learned from studying men. The reference treatments were developed and tested largely in that context, and much of what eventually reached women came as an adaptation of work done for someone else.

Dr. Evan Zhao built RE:YOU on the premise that women experiencing hair thinning warranted their own research rather than a modified version of it. He is a chemical engineer and synthetic biologist who sold his previous company, Revela, to Oddity in 2023. The molecules behind RE:YOU came out of a screening process across roughly 20 million compounds, funded in part by investors including Mars and Maveron.

Zhao has said he plans to launch a new brand every few years, and has already applied the same discovery work to pet care, which suggests he treats the platform as the asset and the brands as what comes off it. Consumer beauty usually runs in the other direction, with the brand first and the science fitted around it afterward.

The Purchase The Internet Wasn’t Built For

A school district that needs eight portable restrooms for a construction season has a harder time buying them than a homeowner has buying a refrigerator. There are procurement rules, a board that approves things on its own schedule, and a budget cycle indifferent to anyone’s timeline.

Noah Manders sells into that through Porta Potties For Sale, one of several properties under the Porta Potty World umbrella. His customers include contractors and event organizers, and also municipalities, schools, and faith-based organizations.

Heavy equipment in this category has long moved through regional dealers and phone quotes, on the theory that this buyer needed a person on the other end of the line. What that produced in practice was a district spending three weeks assembling comparable numbers from three suppliers. Manders is betting the institutional buyer was never the obstacle, and that published specifications, externally defined compliance standards, delivery terms, and financing stated up front do most of what the phone call was doing. Nobody had to invent the category here. Somebody had to notice the buyer had been left out of a decade of e-commerce.

What The Lag Costs

The interval is the expensive part, and it gets funded in different ways. Garcia’s ran about two decades and was underwritten by a career inside institutions that employed him for other reasons. Zhao’s was paid for by an exit. Owers walked into an opening somebody else had already made, which is the cheapest version and also the most competitive one, since everybody else can see it too.

That asymmetry is easy to miss when a category finally arrives and the growth chart gets passed around. Hyrox went from 650 people in a Hamburg gym to what its executives now describe as a mass participation sport in nine years, and most of the value in that curve went to people who were already standing in the room in 2017.
