For decades, few dental procedures have carried a reputation as intimidating as the root canal. Simply hearing the words can make many patients anxious, often because of stories passed down from family members or experiences that occurred years before modern dental technology became the standard.
According to Dr. Yigit Gol, founder of Evolve Endodontics in Westhampton Beach, much of that fear is based on outdated perceptions rather than today’s reality.
“One of the biggest misconceptions about root canals is that they are painful,” says Dr. Gol. “Modern techniques and profound local anesthesia are intended to keep patients comfortable throughout root canal therapy. Once the tooth is fully numb, what the patient experiences is comparable to a routine filling.”
As an endodontist (a dentist who specializes in diagnosing tooth pain and treating the inside of the tooth), Dr. Gol has dedicated his career to one primary goal: preserving natural teeth whenever possible.
“I pursued endodontics because I wanted the skills and expertise to relieve pain while giving patients the opportunity to keep their natural teeth,” he explains. “Many teeth that appear hopeless can be successfully treated and restored. One of the most rewarding moments in my profession is telling a patient that their tooth can, in fact, be saved.”
That philosophy reflects a growing trend in modern dentistry. Rather than viewing extraction as the default solution for a damaged tooth, specialists increasingly focus on preserving the patient’s natural dentition whenever predictable long-term success is possible.
Before recommending treatment, Dr. Gol believes every patient deserves a comprehensive evaluation.

“A proper diagnosis is the foundation of exceptional endodontic care,” he says. “Tooth pain can have many causes, and every case deserves careful investigation. The answer is not always as simple as, ‘You need a root canal.’”
Three-dimensional CBCT imaging and dental operating microscopes are designed to give clinicians a detailed view of complex root anatomy, which is one reason both have become common in specialty practice. Evolve Endodontics uses both as part of its diagnostic process.
Yet Dr. Gol believes technology alone doesn’t define excellent care.
“I believe every patient deserves an honest, individualized discussion about their treatment options,” he says. “My role is to explain the benefits, risks, and long-term outlook of each option so patients can make informed decisions that align with their goals.”
That transparency also means acknowledging that root canal treatment is not always the appropriate solution.
“I would never recommend root canal treatment if I believe the long-term outlook is unfavorable,” Dr. Gol says. “In some cases, extraction is the better option. My commitment is not simply to perform root canals. It is to recommend the treatment that offers each patient the greatest chance for long-term oral health.”
Patient comfort is another area where modern endodontics has evolved significantly. At Evolve Endodontics, the office was intentionally designed to reduce anxiety before treatment even begins. A spacious reception area, abundant natural light, lounge music, comfortable furnishings, and a spa-inspired atmosphere help create an environment that feels markedly different from the traditional dental office. For patients who need additional relaxation, nitrous oxide is also available.
Anxiety management in endodontics often begins before treatment does. Explaining each step of the procedure, confirming that anesthesia has taken full effect, and checking in with the patient along the way are standard parts of a modern endodontic appointment.
“Our goal is to ensure every patient is comfortable throughout the procedure while relieving the pain that brought them to our office in the first place,” Dr. Gol says.
As dentistry continues to advance, Dr. Gol believes patients are becoming more informed and increasingly expect healthcare providers to combine clinical expertise with modern technology and honest communication.
“Technology is no longer simply a convenience. It is becoming the standard of care,” he says. “Advanced imaging, magnification, digital workflows, and evidence-based techniques are dramatically improving diagnosis, precision, and long-term outcomes.”
For patients facing the possibility of a root canal, Dr. Gol hopes one message stands above all others: today’s treatment is designed to relieve pain, not create it.

“The future of dentistry is minimally invasive, technology-driven, and guided by evidence-based care that improves both the patient experience and long-term outcomes,” he says. “Patients deserve honest recommendations, exceptional care, and the opportunity to make informed decisions in a comfortable, compassionate environment.”
