When Tom Arnold released The Digital Detective: First Intervention in early 2025, he was doing something that might have seemed counterintuitive for someone with his background. A cybersecurity expert with decades of investigative experience, a co-founder of a firm that became part of a global security group, and a man who has testified before the U.S. Senate and House was writing a thriller for kids aged ten and up.
Two books into the series, with a third in development, that decision looks less counterintuitive and more inevitable.
What the Second Book Goes After
The first book, First Intervention, teaches through the perspective of bad actors. They try to be creative, hide their activity, and create false trails. And Locard’s Exchange Principle catches them anyway. The internet remembers everything. That is the lesson Jason and Reba’s first case delivers.
The second book, Dark Web Descent, is different in tone and stakes. A student gets caught in the deception of a deepfake with no one to confide in. Another gets pulled into the web of a human trafficking gang. The lessons in the second book are direct and urgent in a way the first was not. The threats are more personal. The consequences are more severe.
Tom sees the escalation as intentional. The series is designed to build. Each book takes Jason and Reba deeper into the landscape of digital crime and teaches something specific about navigating it.
The Third Book and Beyond
Tom is already working on Book Three in the Digital Detective series. He describes it simply as the next step, without revealing details yet. Alongside the writing, he continues teaching in the cybersecurity graduate program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and developing more skills across AI platforms and tools.
That parallel track, writing and teaching simultaneously, is deliberate. The teaching helps keep his knowledge current. The writing keeps his communication skills calibrated for audiences who are not experts. Each makes the other stronger.
The Statistic He’s Trying to Change
Behind all of it is a number Tom does not state directly but that appears to motivate much of what he does in the educational space: the percentage of cyber victims who may have been preventably targeted because they did not have the basic knowledge to protect themselves.
Young people, senior citizens, and everyone in between are targeted indiscriminately by cybercriminals who understand that many people do not know what digital forensics is, do not understand how their data can be used against them, and have never had a real conversation with someone who does.
The Digital Detective series is Tom’s attempt to change that, one reader at a time. If a ten-year-old starts talking to his dad about wireless technology after reading the book, that is a success. If a parent establishes a code word with their family after reading it, that is a success. If one teenager decides to explore cybersecurity as a career because Jason Palmer made it look exciting, that is a success.
The series is not only entertainment. It also works as educational infrastructure for a generation that will likely need stronger digital awareness.
